In the Tatras, apart from a pleasant climate, you will find a wealth of splendid plants and animals. We record around 1400 species of plants. The majority of the area is covered by coniferous forests, with subalpine vegetation in higher altitudes, and no forests in the highest elevations. The Tatras are home to numerous animal species, with some of the most rare including the Tatra chamois, alpine roe deer, red deer, Tatra marmot, Tatra vole, and snow vole. Among the larger predators, you can find the Eurasian lynx, gray wolf, brown bear, and wildcat. Birdlife includes species such as the golden eagle, peregrine falcon, gyrfalcon, Eurasian pygmy owl, Eurasian eagle-owl, and tawny owl. In the rivers, you can find the Eurasian otter, and Tatra streams are inhabited by the European brown trout.
All plants and animals in the Tatra National Park are strictly protected throughout the year.
